*Halloween with the Young-lings*
Barriss looked in the mirror in Ahsoka's room one last time, in preparation of tonight's outing she figured her usual black robe and hood might be a bit plain. Instead a quick look in her friends wardrobe had provided more than enough options to find the perfect outfit, setting her Jedi robe on her cot on the other side of the room she took a closer look at herself.
A tight strapless black dress covered the majority of her olive skinned body save a large chunk of the back (most of the clothes in Ahsoka's wardrobe leaves the back bare), and her regular combat boots were swapped out for a pair of skin tight (also black) knee highs 'I gotta ask Skywalker where the force he lets Ahsoka shop'. But as she used her reflection in the mirror to apply a thin layer of mascara she couldn't help but admire the most time consuming part of her outfit.
It had taken hours to apply the extensions to her hair but as the jet black mass fell gracefully behind her shoulders she knew it had been worth every minute. Barriss had never thought of herself as beautiful before but as she stepped out of Ahsoka's room and into the living room a strange sense of self confidence washed over her, and that sense was only escalated as Anakin looked up from his terminal "whoa, Barriss you look great".
Barriss took a few steps into the living room "thank you master, but I can't help but think there's something missing"
Anakin stood to his feet and floated something she couldn't see through the hallway and into his hands "well it is Halloween, how about this?"
Barriss caught the black piece of clothing and quickly unfurled it to reveal a long cape with several points on the end "perfect master, but why do you have a cape just lying around?"
"that's a story for another time" from the tone in her masters voice she knew not to press the subject
"well either way, would you mind master?" Anakin took the cape and motioned for her to turn around, Barriss barely felt her masters oddly fast hands as they tied the strap around her neck and lightly pulled her hair through so it could once again flow freely. Barriss turned from side to side in an attempt to see the cape behind her, after no avail a small mirror was floated in front of her.
Barriss smiled back at herself as Anakin kept the mirror in place, after a few moments she turned her attention back to her master "so where's Ahsoka?"
"late as usual, said on the com-link she had a surprise in store for you and the young-lings. Not sure what she meant by that but I'd keep your eyes open"
Barriss turned to the door leading into the hallway "knowing Ahsoka it's hard to tell what she has in store for tonight, have a nice night master".
Barriss did her best to return the smiles of every Jedi knight and master she passed but she just wasn't used to being someone your eyes were immediately drawn too, she would much rather be the quiet girl reading a book in the corner. But tonight her feelings didn't matter, no tonight was for the young-lings, when master Yoda had announced he would like someone to volunteer to take their youngest Jedi's in training trick or treating both her and Ahsoka had jumped at the chance.
Much to the glee of nearly every young-ling in the temple, she knew none of the kids had wanted one of the more strict (and frankly way older) Jedi masters escorting them about town. It had taken a few talks to convince the council to allow two padawans to be in charge of every young-ling at the temple but between her way with words and Ahsoka's sheer...well stubbornness, they had gotten their way.
Barriss turned to the hallway leading to the temples main entrance, the moon shined defiantly in the night sky as she noticed master Yoda sitting with the large group of young-lings on a bench outside.
All heads turned in her direction as she approached, a bright smile spread across her face as the young-lings oohed and awed at her outfit. Master Yoda let out an impish laugh "glad to see in the spirit of the holiday you are miss Offee, where is padawan Tano?".
"she was supposed to met me here, she's probably late again master"
Yoda jumped from the bench into his small hover chair that floated nearby "go when miss Tano arrives you may, keep a close eye on the young-lings you will?"
"oh of course master, you have nothing to worry about" Yoda simply nodded as his chair carried him back inside the temple.
"I like your cape"
Barriss turned to a small female twi-lek that had separated herself from the group of young-lings "thank you little one"
"what is Ahsoka going as?"
"I'm not sure, but I'm sure it'll surprise us. Won't it Ahsoka?" at the last of her words Barriss looked straight up to the temples roof.
A black figure almost fell at the mention of her name "well your no fun" the young-lings all gathered around Barriss as the black figure leaped straight into the air and did a few flips in the air before landing on it's feet at the base of the temples steps.
Barriss raised her voice a bit to compensate for the distance between her and Ahsoka "aw, did I ruin you chance to scare a bunch of kids?"
Ahsoka's form was only recognizable by a black outline as she started up the steps "as a matter of fact you didn't, you think I'd only have one trick up my sleeve?". The red blade of a siths lightsaber slightly revealed Ahsoka's face "ready to met the most powerful sith in the universe Jedi scum".
Barriss was about to speak up but a quick look at the young-lings faces revealed a large smile plastered on each one 'their loving this Ahsoka, keep it up'. Ahsoka took a few steps closer and let the moonlight cascade around her, it was then that Barriss felt her breath being ripped away from her lungs.
Ahsoka's usually orange skin was completely dark gray, with the exception of her face markings which now shined bright red instead of their usual white. Her own gasp was thankfully out masked by the combined cheers of every young-ling around her, a grin spread over Ahsoka's lips as she let the young-lings look her over "easy kids, Ahsoka's still a little sore".
Barriss tried to hid the dryness in her throat as she talked "Ahsoka how the heck did you..."
Ahsoka lightly pushed past the kids and stopped a few feet from the temples entrance "half a day with Corusants most intrusive body painter, trust me this paint is everywhere".
Barriss pointed to the red blade still coming from her lightsabers hilt "what about the blade?"
Ahsoka laughed halfheartedly as she pushed the red blade against her stomach "fake, nothing but neon lights inside a plastic tube"
Barriss watched as her friend pushed the collapsible blade back into the hilt 'well you look incredible'
'I could think the same about you, although it looks like somebody borrowed my clothes'
'which reminds me why would you buy a dress?, you don't strike me as that type'
Ahsoka handed her fake saber to the young-lings so they could look it over 'I didn't, a girl gave me that when me and Skyguy saved their family'.
A tug on her cape forced Barriss to look down, the smiling face of a Togruta young-ling looked up at her "master Yoda said we had to be back before midnight"
Ahsoka was handed back her fake saber as the young-lings started down the steps "then lets get moving kids, the night is young".
It wasn't until they started down the first moonlight lit walkway that Barriss noticed the young-lings had also dressed up for their night out, a group of small clone soldiers and crudely painted Yoda's took up the majority of the kids but she did see the small Togruta that had spoken up earlier was dressed oddly similar to master Shaak Ti.
But try as she might to focus on the kids happily walking ahead of them Barriss always caught her gaze switching back to Ahsoka, the girls painted body sparkled every time the moonlight hit her "remind me to thank that body painter".
Ahsoka rubbed her back Lekku as it started to glow "okay Barriss, young-lings nearby"
Barriss looked to the group of kids "what they don't know what we're talking about, watch" in one fluid motion she took Ahsoka's hand in her own and softly kissed her cheek, none of the young-lings even blinked in their direction. Barriss then raised her voice for all the kids to hear "okay kids, stick to groups of two or three and stay where we can see you. Now go have fun" as the kids ran into the nearest decorated walkway Barriss waved at them "see, they may be Jedi's in training but they're still kids"
"I guess you're right, it's just I'm so used to hiding..." Ahsoka gestured to their clasped hands "this. I don't really know how a couple acts when they don't have to hind their relationship"
"well lucky for us we can find out tonight" Barriss tightened her grip on Ahsoka's hand "together".
"Trick or treat!" the combined scream of the young-lings gathered both girls attention
Barriss smiled as she looked down the street "sounds like the night has officially begun".
Ahsoka ignited her fake lightsaber and led Barriss to a moonlight drenched bench in the middle of the street, they sat in silence with their only each others bodies for warmth. The brisk air of the season definitely didn't agree with their choices in apparel but as she watched the young-lings run from building to building Barriss honestly couldn't care less about the weather.
It was a night like this that she had looked forward to since she and Ahsoka first admitted their feelings, a time when they had nothing to hide, nothing to stand in their way. For the first time in a long while she could sit and simply enjoy being with the person she cared most about in the universe, but after about ten minutes it became impossible to ignore the look of impatience on Ahsoka's face.
Barriss waved lazily to the group of young-lings "oh just go"
Ahsoka didn't need any convincing, in the time it took to blink ones eyes the young Togruta leaped from the bench and immediately started after the closest young-ling "hand over the candy Jedi!".
The young-lings let loose fits of laughter as they were chased up and down the street by Ahsoka's painted body, Barriss felt a smile spread on her face 'sometimes I forget how young she still is, then again if you can't beat em' "don't worry kids I got your back!" quickly untying her cape and setting it on the bench Barriss took off down the street 'any excuse to tackle that body'.
